ジャン=バティスト・モノワイエ
装飾的花卉静画の巨匠
ジャン=バティスト・モノイエは、花の静物画を専門とするフランドル系フランスの画家でした。彼はゴブラン織工房とボーヴェ織工房に所属し、織工のために果物や花の下絵を制作し、ボーヴェでは「中国皇帝」シリーズの下絵を共同制作した3人の画家の一人でした。 リールで生まれたが、1650年までにはパリに移り、オテル・ランベールの装飾作業に従事している記録が残っている。シャルル・ルブランに見出され、マリー城およびグラン・ドーファンの居城であるムードン城で装飾画を手掛けた。1665年、彼が専門とするジャンルである花と果物、芸術品を組み合わせた静物画を制作し、王立絵画彫刻アカデミーに迎えられた。彼がパリのサロンに出品したのは1673年の一度だけで、その時「M. バティスト」によって4点の花の絵画が展示された。 1690年、彼はフランスを離れてイングランドへ渡り、ロンドン・ブルームズベリーのモンタギュー・ハウスの装飾画制作に従事しました。そこで彼は暖炉の上や扉の上に50点以上の果物と花のパネルを制作し、その一部はノーサンプトンシャーのボートン・ハウスに現存しています。彼は1699年にロンドンで亡くなりました。 彼の息子の一人、アントワーヌ・モノワ(Antoine Monnoyer、1747年没)は「若きバティスト」と呼ばれ、花の画家であった。もう一人の息子は「バティスト修士」として知られ、ローマへ行きドミニコ会の修道士となり、画家となった。 彼の版画集、特に『Le Livre de toutes sortes de fleurs d'après nature』(自然に基づくあらゆる種類の花の本)は、植物学的な正確さで花を描き、数十年にわたり装飾デザイナーに資料を提供した。モノワの花卉版画は、彼の死後長く、ロンドンのソーホー tapestry works などのタペストリー製作者によって使用され続けた。20世紀、詩人ウォレス・スティーブンスはその哲学詩『Esthéthique du Mal』(悪の美学)でモノワのタイトル『Livre de toutes sortes de fleurs d'après nature』を引用し、ハロルド・ブルームはこの詩がスティーブンスの作品において中心的であることを強調した;スティーブンスにとって「あらゆる種類の花」は、穏やかで感傷的な詩を象徴し、「あらゆる種類の不幸」に対処し和らげようと試みた。
