Jean-Simon Berthélemy

Jean-Simon Berthélemy fue un pintor de historia francés que recibió el encargo de pintar techos alegóricos para el Palacio del Louvre, el Palacio de Luxemburgo y otros, en un estilo conservador tardío barroco-rocoqué, solo ligeramente afectado por el neoclasicismo. Berthélemy nació en Laon, Aisne, hijo del escultor Jean-Joseph Berthélemy. Se formó en el taller de Noël Hallé, profesor de la Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, y alcanzó su primera reputación en la década de 1760; después de obtener el segundo lugar en 1763, ganó el Prix de Rome de la Academia en 1767. Un encargo temprano fue una serie de pinturas decorativas bajo la dirección del arquitecto Jean-Gabriel Legendre para el Hôtel de l'Intendance de Champagne en Châlons-sur-Marne, de las cuales el artista solo completó seis sobrepuertas, muy al estilo de François Boucher, y delegó el resto del encargo a un compañero de academia. Hallé, el maestro de Berthélemy, proporcionó cartones para la manufactura real de tapices de los Gobelinos, donde fue nombrado superintendente en 1770; también se solicitó a Berthélemy que proporcionara cartones para los tejedores. Berthélemy was an esteemed painter in his day, chosen to join the entourage accompanying Napoleon's campaign in Italy, where he was among the experts assigned the task of selecting works of art to be transferred to Paris under terms of the Treaty of Tolentino, February 1797. He died in Paris. When two monographs on Berthélemy were published in 1979, Philip Conisbee, reviewing them in The Burlington Magazine, observed drily: "Two monographs on Berthélemy is overkill for a painter who could have been dispatched with a single substantial article. The French academic system of art education in the eighteenth century, backed up by the stimulus of church and state patronage, was so efficient and rigorous that even an average talent could be sufficiently conditioned to produce a handful of decent history-paintings, which are sometimes minor masterpieces."
