Johann Gottlob Kurr
Duitse natuuronderzoeker
Johann Gottlob von Kurr was een Duitse apotheker en natuurvorser, die bijdragen leverde op het gebied van de plantkunde en de mineralogie. Hij werkte enkele jaren als apotheker in Calw en andere gemeenschappen, studeerde vervolgens geneeskunde en chirurgie aan de Universiteit van Tübingen, waar hij in 1832 doctoraten behaalde in beide disciplines. Van 1832 tot 1870 gaf hij lessen in natuurlijke historie aan de beroepsschool in Stuttgart (die in 1841 een polytechnisch instituut werd). Hij was lid van de Vereniging voor Vaderlandse Natuurkunde in Württemberg en vanaf 1844 conservator van de geognostisch-paleontologische collecties. In 1828 reisde hij naar Noorwegen, waar hij talrijke botanische en mineralogische specimens verzamelde, en later in zijn carrière voerde hij onderzoeken uit in de Zwabische Alb met geoloog Leopold von Buch en botanicus Gustav Schübler. Tijdens zijn wetenschappelijke excursies reisde hij ook naar de Zwitserse Jura, de Alpen, de Vesuvius en naar talrijke locaties in Duitsland. In 1842 noemden Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter en Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel het plantengeslacht Kurria naar hem.
