John Obadiah Westwood fue un entomólogo y arqueólogo inglés, también conocido por sus talentos artísticos. Publicó varias obras ilustradas sobre insectos y antigüedades. Fue uno de los primeros entomólogos en ocupar un puesto académico en la Universidad de Oxford. Era un teólogo natural, firmemente antidarwinista, y a veces adoptaba una perspectiva quinaria. Aunque nunca viajó ampliamente, describió especies de todo el mundo basándose en especímenes, especialmente de las especies más grandes, curiosas y coloridas, obtenidos por naturalistas y coleccionistas en Inglaterra.
