Joseph Edward Southall
Rinascita della tempera nelle Arti e Mestieri
Joseph Edward Southall era un pittore inglese associato al movimento Arts and Crafts. Figura di spicco nella rinascita della pittura a tempera tra il XIX e l'inizio del XX secolo, Southall fu il leader del Gruppo di Artisti-Artigiani di Birmingham, uno degli ultimi avamposti del Romanticismo nelle arti visive e un importante anello di congiunzione tra i preraffaelliti tardivi e i simbolisti della Slade School di fine secolo. Quacchero per tutta la vita, Southall fu un attivo socialista e pacifista, inizialmente come membro radicale del Partito Liberale e in seguito del Partito Laburista Indipendente. Southall fu eletto associato della Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) nel 1898 e membro nel 1902. Divenne presidente della società nel 1939 e rimase in carica fino alla sua morte nel 1944.
