Parrocel behoort tot een dynastie van kunstenaars uit Avignon die bijna twee eeuwen beslaat. Opgeleid door zijn vader Pierre (1670-1739), werd Joseph in 1753 toegelaten tot de Académie Royale als historieschilder.
