Jozef Brandt
Meister der Schlachtengemälde
Józef Brandt war ein polnischer Maler und ein Vertreter der Münchner Schule, der am besten für seine Schlachtengemälde bekannt ist. Brandt studierte in Warschau an der Schule von J.N. Leszczynski und am Adelsinstitut. 1858 reiste er nach Paris, um an der École centrale Paris zu studieren, ließ sich jedoch von Juliusz Kossak überzeugen, das Ingenieurwesen zugunsten der Malerei aufzugeben. Er studierte als Maler in München bei Franz Adam und Karl Piloty und eröffnete dann sein eigenes Atelier. Seine Gemälde behandeln hauptsächlich das militärische Leben des 17. Jahrhunderts, obwohl er auch einige Studien zum polnischen Bauernleben angefertigt hat. 1893 wurde Brandt der Orden de Isabel la Católica verliehen, und 1898 wurde er Empfänger des Bayerischen Maximiliansordens für Wissenschaft und Kunst.
