Jozef Brandt
Meester van gevechtsscènes
Józef Brandt was een Pools schilder en een vertegenwoordiger van de Münchense School, vooral bekend om zijn schilderijen van veldslagen. Brandt studeerde in Warschau aan de school van J.N. Leszczynski en aan het Adelsinstituut. In 1858 vertrok hij naar Parijs om te studeren aan de École centrale Paris, maar werd door Juliusz Kossak overgehaald de techniek op te geven ten gunste van de schilderkunst. Hij studeerde als schilder in München bij Franz Adam en Karl Piloty en opende vervolgens zijn eigen atelier. Zijn schilderijen bestuderen voornamelijk het militaire leven in de 17e eeuw, hoewel hij ook enkele studies heeft gemaakt van het Poolse boerenleven. In 1893 werd Brandt onderscheiden met de Orde van Isabella de Katholieke, en in 1898 werd hij ontvanger van de Beierse Maximiliaansorde voor Wetenschap en Kunst.
