Józef Simmler
Pintor histórico polaco clásico
Józef Simmler fue un pintor polaco conocido por su estilo clásico y sus temas polacos. Simmler provenía de una adinerada familia protestante alemana. Fue esta educación acomodada lo que le permitió perseguir su interés en ciudades como Dresde, Múnich y París. Quizás su obra más famosa sea «La muerte de Bárbara Radziwill» («Śmierć Barbary Radziwiłłówny»), una obra al óleo sobre lienzo completada en 1860. La pintura ganó una inmensa popularidad cuando la Sociedad para el Fomento de las Bellas Artes de Varsovia, una institución recién formada con el objetivo de fomentar y promover el arte y los artistas nacionales, la exhibió en 1861. Ahora cuelga en el Museo Nacional de Varsovia. Sus otras pinturas famosas son «Los hijos del rey Eduardo» (1847) y «Retrato de un noble con un loro» (1859). La principal contribución de Józef Simmler al arte polaco es la humanidad que evocaban sus pinturas. Fue un retratista especialmente dotado. Utilizando los estilos de pinturas de trajes predominantes en Francia, produjo obras que permitieron al público vislumbrar el pasado. Sin embargo, sus pinturas eran mucho más que simples reproducciones de la historia. Las magistrales obras también transmitían un profundo sentido de compasión, temor y ternura. El cuñado de su hija fue Eduard Strasburger, el famoso botánico polaco-alemán. Uno de los nietos de Simmler fue Henryk Leon Strasburger, delegado polaco ante la Sociedad de las Naciones.
