Mary Smirke was een Engelse kunstenaar en vertaler. Smirke was een van de acht kinderen van de schilder en illustrator Robert Smirke en zijn vrouw Elizabeth, die in 1825 overleed. Hun andere kinderen omvatten de architecten Sir Robert Smirke en Sydney Smirke, de tekenaar Richard Smirke en de advocaat en archeoloog Sir Edward Smirke. Mary Smirke ging naar school in Rickmansworth en ontving haar artistieke opleiding van haar vader. Ze werd ingehuurd als schilder en kopist door Nathaniel Dance-Holland en Sir Thomas Lawrence, en groeide uit tot een gewaardeerd landschapsschilder. Tussen 1809 en 1814 exposeerde ze zes schilderijen aan de Royal Academy in Londen. Deze werken omvatten Gezicht op Arundel Castle en Cottage bij Blackheath. Smirke was also a translator and in 1818 her English translation of Don Quixote, with illustrations by her father, was published. She published two volumes of poetry, in 1843 and 1853, as Illustrated Translations from the German which she also illustrated with pen and ink drawings. Smirke's portrait of her father is held by the Royal Academy in London. The portrait was copied and engraved by John Jackson and Charles Picart and examples of that engraving are held by the National Portrait Gallery while both the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Institute of British Architects hold examples of her drawings. The Yale Center for British Art holds a 1823 painting by Smirke.
