Matthieu Elias
Pintor de altares em Dunkerque
Matheiu Elias, também conhecido como Elyas ou Elie, nasceu em Peena, perto de Cassel, em 1658. Seus pais eram extremamente pobres, e ele trabalhava cuidando do gado quando era menino. Nessa humilde situação, foi notado por um pintor de Dunquerque chamado Philippe De Corbehem, enquanto desenhava objetos no chão. O artista, impressionado pela singularidade da circunstância e pela evidente disposição do menino, convenceu sua mãe a confiá-lo aos seus cuidados. Após instruí-lo por algum tempo, enviou-o a Paris para aperfeiçoamento, onde conseguiu emprego e residiu por vários anos. Com a morte de De Corbehem, estabeleceu-se em Dunquerque e pintou algumas obras de altar para as igrejas daquela cidade e seus arredores. Ele morreu em Dunquerque em 1741.
