馬蒂厄·埃利亞斯（Matheiu Elias），又稱埃利亞斯（Elyas）或埃利（Elie），於1658年出生在卡塞爾附近的佩納。他的父母極其貧困，童年時他受僱放牧牲畜。在這種卑微的境況中，一位名叫菲利普·德·科爾貝漢（Philippe De Corbehem）的敦克爾克畫家注意到他在地上描摹物體。這位藝術家被這一不同尋常的情形以及男孩顯而易見的天賦所打動，說服了他的母親將他託付給自己照顧。 在指導他一段時間後，他派他前往巴黎深造，他在那裡找到了工作，並居住了數年。德科爾貝姆去世後，他定居於敦克爾克，並為該鎮及其周邊地區的教堂繪製了一些祭壇畫。他於1741年在敦克爾克去世。
