모드 헌트 스콰이어
컬러 동판화와 파스텔의 대가
모드 헌트 스콰이어는 미국의 화가이자 판화가였습니다. 그녀는 예술가 에셀 마스와 평생의 관계를 유지하며 미국과 프랑스에서 함께 여행하고 생활했습니다. 스콰이어는 1873년 1월 20일 오하이오주 밀포드에서 어머니와 아버지 알프레드 스콰이어 사이에서 태어났습니다. 알프레드는 바이올리니스트이자 음악가로, 음악 수업을 가르치고 음악 가게를 운영했습니다. 그녀의 어머니는 그림 수업을 가르쳤습니다. 스콰이어는 재능 있는 음악가이자 예술가였으며 다른 언어에도 능통했습니다. 스콰이어는 1894년부터 1898년까지 신시내티 미술 아카데미에서 공부했으며, 그녀의 지도 교수는 루이스 헨리 미킨과 프랭크 두베넥이었다. 그녀는 반에서 두 번째로 우수한 성적을 거두어 수학과 라틴어에서의 탁월함으로 동문 금메달을 받았고, 이사회가 수여하는 싱턴 금메달도 수상했다. 스콰이어는 컬러 에칭 판화와 컬러 파스텔 작품으로 주목을 받았으며, 학생 시절부터 책 일러스트레이터로 활동했습니다. 이 분야에서 그녀의 많은 작품은 마스와 공동으로 출판되었습니다. 그녀는 오토느 살롱 협회, 데생가 및 유머리스트 협회, 국립 미술 협회의 회원이 되었으며, 1915년 파나마-태평양 국제 박람회를 포함한 다양한 전시회에서 작품을 선보였습니다.
