Pieter Fransz. de Grebber
Pioneiro do classicismo de Haarlem
Pieter Fransz de Grebber foi um pintor holandês da Idade de Ouro. De Grebber nasceu em Haarlem, filho mais velho de Frans Pietersz de Grebber (1573–1643), pintor e bordador em Haarlem, e irmão dos pintores Maria e Albert. Aprendeu a pintar com seu pai e com Hendrick Goltzius. Descendia de uma família católica e artística, e sua irmã Maria tornou-se mais tarde a sogra de Gabriel Metsu. Era amigo do padre e musicólogo Jan Albertszoon Ban, e um poema foi musicado pelo compositor de Haarlem Cornelis Padbrué. Em 1632, tornou-se membro da Guilda de São Lucas de Haarlem, mas já atuava como pintor há 10 anos. Seus alunos foram Gerbrand Ban, Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Egbert van Heemskerck e Dirck Helmbreeker. Em 1618, pai e filho foram a Antuérpia e negociaram com Peter Paul Rubens a venda de sua pintura Daniel na Cova dos Leões. A obra foi então entregue – por intermédio do embaixador inglês na República, Sir Dudley Carleton – ao rei Carlos I. Pieter recebeu encomendas importantes não apenas em Haarlem, mas também do stadhouder Frederico Henrique. Assim, trabalhou na decoração do Huis Honselaarsdijk em Naaldwijk e do Paleis Noordeinde no Huis ten Bosch, em Haia. Pintou retábulos para igrejas na Flandres e para igrejas católicas escondidas na República. É possível que também tenha trabalhado para clientes dinamarqueses. Pieter permaneceu solteiro e viveu no beguinário de Haarlem de 1634 até sua morte. Besides history paintings, Pieter de Grebber also painted a number of portraits; furthermore many drawings and a few etchings by him have survived. From different influences, such as the Utrecht Caravaggistism, Rubens and also Rembrandt, he came up with a very personal style. He was, together with Salomon de Bray, the forerunner and first peak of the "Haarlem classicism" school, producing paintings characterized by a well-organized clarity and light tints. Em 1649, De Grebber escreveu o tratado «Regulen welcke by een goet Schilder en Teyckenaar geobserveert en achtervolght moeten werden» (Regras que um bom pintor e mestre do desenho devem observar). Neste documento, ele explica as onze regras mais importantes que, segundo ele, os pintores classicistas devem ter o cuidado de observar. Embora os classicistas não jurassem por tais regras, estas foram sempre rigorosamente observadas. Quase todas essas regras são retiradas do próprio «Schilder-boeck» maneirista de Karel van Mander, no qual a pintura histórica era apresentada como a mais alta na hierarquia dos gêneros.
