Pieter van der Werff

Pieter van der Werff était un peintre néerlandais de l'Âge d'or. Il a assisté son frère aîné, Adriaen van der Werff. Il apprit la peinture auprès de son frère Adriaen et, selon le RKD, il passa la majeure partie de sa vie à travailler à Rotterdam, où il peignit les riches et les célèbres. Il existe des indices suggérant qu'il aurait pu se rendre en Angleterre pour chercher des commandes, car deux portraits peints vers 1709, attribués à un « gentleman inconnu » et à une « femme inconnue », sont exposés à la Victoria Art Gallery de Bath. Leurs titres alternatifs sont « John Churchill, premier duc de Marlborough » et « Sarah, duchesse de Marlborough ». Pendant son séjour en Angleterre, il aurait pu recevoir des commandes de la famille Fairfax, une ancienne famille catholique du Yorkshire qui possédait d'importantes terres et propriétés dans le comté.
