Sir Wilfrid Lawson

Sir Wilfrid Lawson, 2. Baronet, war ein englischer Abstinenzler und radikaler, anti-imperialistischer Politiker der Liberal Party, der zwischen 1859 und 1906 zeitweise im House of Commons saß. Er wurde als der führende Humorist im House of Commons anerkannt. Lawson war von 1859 bis 1865 und von 1868 bis 1885 Abgeordneter für Carlisle, von 1886 bis 1900 für Cockermouth, von 1903 bis 1906 für Camborne und 1906 erneut für Cockermouth. Er war der Sohn von Sir Wilfrid Lawson, 1. Baronet, von Brayton, der seinen Namen von Wybergh geändert hatte, und Caroline Graham, der Tochter von Sir James Graham. Er wurde privat zu Hause unterrichtet. Er war Gründungsmitglied sowohl des National Liberal Club als auch der Reform League, ein prominentes Mitglied der Peace Society und der Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade. Er war Direktor der Maryport and Carlisle Railway und Friedensrichter für Cumberland. Er war stets ein begeisterter Anhänger der Abstinenzbewegung und wurde 1879 Präsident der United Kingdom Alliance. Wie sein jüngerer Bruder William war er ein fortschrittlicher Genossenschafter und Landwirt.
