業餘蝕刻威爾遜風景畫
湯瑪斯·黑斯廷斯上尉原名湯瑪斯·巴尼特，是一位律師的兒子。1812年，他和他的兄弟都將姓氏改為他們母系曾祖母的姓氏，因為他們的父親於1807年被判偽證罪。湯瑪斯在1795年至1811年間擔任英國陸軍軍官，期間接受測量員培訓，在印度服役，並於1799年晉升為上尉。從1819年到1853年，他在海關部門任職，主要擔任高級別的稅務司長職務。 他是一位熱衷的業餘畫家、素描家、水彩藝術家及版畫家，創作題材涵蓋風景、地形景觀、海洋主題與海岸場景。身為版畫家，他成為利物浦藝術學院的準會員，並在多處廣泛參展，包括皇家藝術學院、水彩畫家協會、英國學會以及希伯尼安學院。他也是射箭運動的積極推動者，並於1829年創立了卡里斯布魯克射箭協會。 黑斯廷斯受到威爾士風景畫家理查德·威爾遜（皇家藝術學院院士，1714–1782）的影響。他製作了四十幅威爾遜畫作的蝕刻版畫（其中兩幅為他所收藏），並於1824年作為系列作品出版。
