Toshikata Mizuno
Erede ukiyo-e con influenze occidentali
Nato a Edo con il nome di Kumejiro Nonaka, Toshikata Mizuno era figlio di un maestro stuccatore. A quattordici anni, Toshikata iniziò lo studio dell'ukiyo-e sotto la guida di Yoshioshi. Le stravaganze del famoso maestro di ukiyo-e si rivelarono troppo per il padre di Toshikata, e la formazione fu interrotta prematuramente. Toshikata proseguì gli studi con vari maestri: Ryuto Yamada per la pittura su ceramica e la pittura in stile occidentale, Hoshu Shibata per i paesaggi in stile Nanga, nonché Seitei Watanabe e Shoso Mishima. Esplorò ulteriormente la resa in stile occidentale attraverso riviste, giornali e riproduzioni di dipinti britannici. In seguito, Toshikata tornò nello studio di Yoshitoshi. Il suo maestro nutriva un grande affetto per il giovane artista e lo designò come suo successore. Nel 1887, su raccomandazione del suo maestro, Toshikata si unì al giornale Yamato shinbun come illustratore. Lavorò per la rivista fino al 1894. Realizzò anche diverse litografie per la rivista letteraria Shinshosetsu e stampe di guerra (senso-e) durante la guerra cino-giapponese.
