Walter Hood Fitch
Produktiver viktorianischer Botanik-Lithograf
Walter Hood Fitch war ein botanischer Illustrator, der in Glasgow, Schottland, geboren wurde und etwa 10.000 Zeichnungen für verschiedene Publikationen anfertigte. Seine Arbeiten in Farblithografie, darunter 2.700 Illustrationen für Curtis's Botanical Magazine, umfassten bis zu 200 Tafeln pro Jahr. Fitch war ab dem Alter von 17 Jahren im Stoffdruck tätig und wandte sich der botanischen Kunst zu, nachdem er William Jackson Hooker kennengelernt hatte, den Regius Professor für Botanik, einen kompetenten botanischen Illustrator und Herausgeber des Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Fitchs erste Lithografie von Mimulus roseus erschien 1834 im Botanical Magazine, und er wurde bald dessen alleiniger Künstler. Im Jahr 1841 wurde W.J. Hooker Direktor der Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, und Fitch zog nach London. Nach 1841 war Fitch der einzige Künstler für alle offiziellen und inoffiziellen Publikationen, die von Kew herausgegeben wurden; seine Arbeit wurde von Hooker persönlich bezahlt. Es war nicht ungewöhnlich, dass er gleichzeitig an mehreren verschiedenen Publikationen arbeitete; er konnte direkt auf den Lithografiestein zeichnen, um Zeit zu sparen. Diese Chromolithografien basierten auf botanischen Illustrationen, die von Hooker und anderen bereitgestellt wurden, und erzielten einige seiner spektakulärsten Ergebnisse. Fitchs wichtige Werke sind seine Illustrationen für William Hookers A Century of Orchidaceous Plants (1849) und für James Batemans A Monograph of Odontoglossum (1864–74). Er erstellte außerdem etwa 500 Tafeln für Hookers Icones Plantarum (1836–76) sowie vier lithografische Tafeln für die Monografie Victoria Regia. Letztere Arbeit erhielt im Athenaeum kritische Anerkennung: „Sie sind akkurat und sie sind schön".
