Walter Hood Fitch
Litógrafo botánico victoriano prolífico
Walter Hood Fitch fue un ilustrador botánico, nacido en Glasgow, Escocia, que realizó unos 10.000 dibujos para diversas publicaciones. Su trabajo en litografía a color, que incluye 2.700 ilustraciones para la revista Curtis's Botanical Magazine, producía hasta 200 láminas al año. Fitch se involucró en la impresión de telas desde los 17 años y se dedicó al arte botánico después de conocer a William Jackson Hooker, profesor regio de Botánica, un competente ilustrador botánico y editor de Curtis's Botanical Magazine. La primera litografía de Fitch de Mimulus roseus apareció en el Botanical Magazine en 1834, y pronto se convirtió en su único artista. En 1841, W.J. Hooker se convirtió en director de los Reales Jardines Botánicos de Kew y Fitch se mudó a Londres. Después de 1841, Fitch fue el único artista de todas las publicaciones oficiales y no oficiales emitidas por Kew; su trabajo era pagado personalmente por Hooker. No era inusual que trabajara en varias publicaciones diferentes simultáneamente; podía dibujar directamente sobre la piedra litográfica para ahorrar tiempo. Estas cromolitografías se basaban en ilustraciones botánicas proporcionadas por Hooker y otros, y produjeron algunos de sus resultados más espectaculares. Las obras importantes de Fitch son sus ilustraciones para A Century of Orchidaceous Plants de William Hooker (1849) y para A Monograph of Odontoglossum de James Bateman (1864–74). También creó alrededor de 500 láminas para Icones Plantarum de Hooker (1836–76) y cuatro láminas litográficas para la monografía Victoria Regia. Esta última obra recibió elogios de la crítica en el Athenaeum: «son precisas y son bellas».
