Walter Hood Fitch

Walter Hood Fitch était un illustrateur botanique, né à Glasgow, en Écosse, qui a réalisé environ 10 000 dessins pour diverses publications. Son travail en lithographie couleur, comprenant 2 700 illustrations pour le Curtis's Botanical Magazine, produisait jusqu'à 200 planches par an. Fitch s'est impliqué dans l'impression sur tissu dès l'âge de 17 ans et s'est tourné vers l'art botanique après avoir rencontré William Jackson Hooker, professeur royal de botanique, illustrateur botanique compétent et rédacteur en chef du Curtis's Botanical Magazine. La première lithographie de Fitch représentant le Mimulus roseus est parue dans le Botanical Magazine en 1834, et il est rapidement devenu son unique artiste. En 1841, W.J. Hooker est devenu directeur des Jardins botaniques royaux de Kew et Fitch a déménagé à Londres. Après 1841, Fitch était le seul artiste pour toutes les publications officielles et non officielles publiées par Kew ; son travail était rémunéré personnellement par Hooker. Il n'était pas inhabituel qu'il travaille simultanément sur plusieurs publications différentes ; il pouvait dessiner directement sur la pierre lithographique pour gagner du temps. Ces chromolithographies étaient basées sur des illustrations botaniques fournies par Hooker et d'autres, et ont produit certains de ses résultats les plus spectaculaires. Les œuvres importantes de Fitch sont ses illustrations pour A Century of Orchidaceous Plants de William Hooker (1849) et pour A Monograph of Odontoglossum de James Bateman (1864–74). Il a également réalisé environ 500 planches pour Icones Plantarum de Hooker (1836–76) et quatre planches lithographiques pour la monographie Victoria Regia. Cette dernière œuvre a reçu les éloges de la critique dans l'Athenaeum : « elles sont exactes et elles sont belles ».
