Walter Hood Fitch
Litografo botanico vittoriano prolifico
Walter Hood Fitch era un illustratore botanico, nato a Glasgow, in Scozia, che realizzò circa 10.000 disegni per varie pubblicazioni. Il suo lavoro in litografia a colori, comprendente 2.700 illustrazioni per il Curtis's Botanical Magazine, produceva fino a 200 tavole all'anno. Fitch si occupò di stampa su tessuto dall'età di 17 anni e si dedicò all'arte botanica dopo aver incontrato William Jackson Hooker, professore regio di Botanica, un competente illustratore botanico e direttore del Curtis's Botanical Magazine. La prima litografia di Fitch di Mimulus roseus apparve nel Botanical Magazine nel 1834, e presto divenne il suo unico artista. Nel 1841, W.J. Hooker divenne direttore dei Giardini Botanici Reali di Kew e Fitch si trasferì a Londra. Dopo il 1841, Fitch fu l'unico artista per tutte le pubblicazioni ufficiali e non ufficiali pubblicate da Kew; il suo lavoro era pagato personalmente da Hooker. Non era insolito che lavorasse contemporaneamente a diverse pubblicazioni; poteva disegnare direttamente sulla pietra litografica per risparmiare tempo. Queste cromolitografie erano basate su illustrazioni botaniche fornite da Hooker e altri, e produssero alcuni dei suoi risultati più spettacolari. Le opere importanti di Fitch sono le sue illustrazioni per A Century of Orchidaceous Plants di William Hooker (1849) e per A Monograph of Odontoglossum di James Bateman (1864–74). Realizzò inoltre circa 500 tavole per Icones Plantarum di Hooker (1836–76) e quattro tavole litografiche per la monografia Victoria Regia. Quest'ultima opera ricevette consensi dalla critica sull'Athenaeum: «sono accurate e sono belle».
