Walter Hood Fitch
Litógrafo botânico vitoriano prolífico
Walter Hood Fitch foi um ilustrador botânico, nascido em Glasgow, Escócia, que executou cerca de 10.000 desenhos para várias publicações. Seu trabalho em litografia colorida, incluindo 2.700 ilustrações para a revista Curtis's Botanical Magazine, produzia até 200 pranchas por ano. Fitch envolveu-se na impressão de tecidos desde os 17 anos e voltou-se para a arte botânica após conhecer William Jackson Hooker, professor régio de Botânica, um competente ilustrador botânico e editor do Curtis's Botanical Magazine. A primeira litografia de Fitch de Mimulus roseus apareceu no Botanical Magazine em 1834, e ele logo se tornou seu único artista. Em 1841, W.J. Hooker tornou-se diretor dos Jardins Botânicos Reais de Kew e Fitch mudou-se para Londres. Após 1841, Fitch foi o único artista de todas as publicações oficiais e não oficiais emitidas por Kew; seu trabalho era pago pessoalmente por Hooker. Não era incomum que ele trabalhasse em várias publicações diferentes simultaneamente; ele podia desenhar diretamente na pedra litográfica para economizar tempo. Essas cromolitografias eram baseadas em ilustrações botânicas fornecidas por Hooker e outros, e produziram alguns de seus resultados mais espetaculares. As obras importantes de Fitch são suas ilustrações para A Century of Orchidaceous Plants, de William Hooker (1849), e para A Monograph of Odontoglossum, de James Bateman (1864–74). Ele também criou cerca de 500 pranchas para Icones Plantarum, de Hooker (1836–76), e quatro pranchas litográficas para a monografia Victoria Regia. Esta última obra recebeu aclamação da crítica no Athenaeum: "elas são precisas e são belas".
