Władysław Teodor Benda

Władysław Teodor « W.T. » Benda était un peintre, illustrateur et designer polonais. Fils du musicien Jan Szymon Benda et neveu de l'actrice Helena Modrzejewska (connue aux États-Unis sous le nom de Helena Modjeska), W.T. Benda a étudié l'art à l'École des technologies et des arts de Cracovie, dans sa Pologne natale, ainsi qu'à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Vienne, en Autriche. Il est arrivé aux États-Unis en 1899 pour rendre visite à sa tante Helena, qui vivait alors en Californie. Il y est resté et a déménagé à New York en 1902, où il a fréquenté l'Art Students League of New York et la William Merritt Chase School. Pendant cette période, Benda a étudié sous la direction de Robert Henri et d'Edward Penfield. Il a rejoint la Society of Illustrators en 1907, l'Architectural League en 1916 et est devenu citoyen américain naturalisé en 1911. Il était également membre de la National Society of Mural Painters. Il est resté à New York pour le reste de sa vie. Benda a épousé Romola Campfield, et ils ont eu deux filles, Eleonora et Basia, qui étaient toutes les deux artistes.
