Abraham Hondius

Abraham Danielsz. Hondius era un pittore dell'età d'oro olandese noto per le sue raffigurazioni di animali. Era il figlio di uno scalpellino cittadino, Daniel Abramsz de Hondt. Hondius nacque a Rotterdam e si formò con Pieter de Bloot (1601–1658) e Cornelis Saftleven. Visse a Rotterdam fino al 1659 per poi trasferirsi ad Amsterdam. Si trasferì a Londra nel 1666, dove trascorse il resto della sua vita. Hondius combinò throughout la sua carriera diverse influenze stilistiche e lottò per sviluppare uno stile proprio. Tuttavia si specializzò in qualche modo in pezzi animali: più di due terzi dei suoi dipinti, acqueforti e disegni sono scene di caccia, lotte di animali e studi di animali. Eseguì anche paesaggi, scene di genere e scene religiose. Hondius si trasferì molto probabilmente a Londra nel 1666, dove trascorse il resto della sua vita e morì. Dipinse vedute di Londra come Il Tamigi Ghiacciato e Il Ponte di Londra. La sua ultima opera conosciuta è Scimmia e Gatto che Litigano per Pollame Morto, datata 1690.
