Abraham van Diepenbeeck
Allievo di Rubens, pittore mitologico
Abraham van Diepenbeeck era un pittore olandese della scuola fiamminga. Van Diepenbeeck fu battezzato a 's-Hertogenbosch. Dopo aver ricevuto un'educazione classica, divenne allievo e assistente di Peter Paul Rubens. Si occupava di soggetti mitologici e storici, nonché di ritratti. Si recò ad Anversa intorno al 1629 e ottenne i suoi primi successi nella pittura su vetro, tra le sue produzioni vi erano vetrate nella cattedrale locale che rappresentavano le "Opere di Misericordia". Lavori simili nella chiesa dei Domenicani mostrano scene della "Vita di San Paolo". Van Diepenbeek fu ammesso nella gilda dei pittori nel 1638 e divenne direttore dell'Accademia Reale di Belle Arti (Anversa) nel 1641. Fu dopo una visita in Italia che l'artista iniziò a dipingere principalmente a olio e a illustrare. Tra le sue illustrazioni ci sono cinquantotto disegni incisi da Cornelis Bloemaert per i "Tableaux du Temple des Muses" di Michel de Marolles. Durante il regno di Carlo I d'Inghilterra, van Diepenbeeck si trovava in Inghilterra dove, oltre a dipingere ritratti del primo duca di Newcastle e della sua famiglia, l'artista illustrò il libro di quel nobile sull'equitazione. Morì all'età di 79 anni ad Anversa.
