Adam Willaerts
Pittore marino olandese
Adam Willaerts fu un pittore dell'età dell'oro olandese. Willaerts (talvolta Willarts o Willers) nacque a Londra da genitori fiamminghi che erano fuggiti da Anversa per motivi religiosi. Nel 1585 la famiglia viveva a Leida. Dal 1597 fino alla sua morte, Adam visse e lavorò ad Utrecht. Diventò membro della Corporazione di San Luca di Utrecht nel 1611 e successivamente ne divenne il decano nel 1620. I suoi figli Cornelis, Abraham e Isaac seguirono le sue orme. Era noto come pittore di scene fluviali e canalizzate, paesaggi costieri, mercati del pesce, processioni e scene di genere. Dipingeva anche villaggi e battaglie navali. La sua allegoria della vittoria degli olandesi sulla flotta spagnola a Gibilterra si trova nel Rijksmuseum.
