Albert Baertsoen
Pittore belga di scene urbane
Albert Baertsoen era un pittore, pastellista e artista grafico belga. Nacque a Gand. Suo padre era un industriale e produttore tessile. Nel 1882 iniziò a frequentare la Reale Accademia di Belle Arti, dove studiò sotto Gustave Den Duyts e Jean Delvin. Il suo debutto come pittore avvenne nel 1887, quando partecipò a una mostra a Bruxelles organizzata dal gruppo secessionista l'Essor. Continuò i suoi studi a Parigi, alla scuola d'arte di Alfred Philippe Roll, ed espose al Salon nel 1889. L'anno seguente, accompagnò James Ensor, Frantz Charlet e altri pittori belgi in un viaggio di studio a Londra. Nel 1894, contribuì a fondare il "Cercle des Beaux-Arts d'Ostende". Gli anni 1894/95 videro un altro soggiorno a Parigi, dove il suo dipinto "Oude Vlaamse Vaart" (Vecchie Vele Fiamminghe) fu acquisito dal Musée du Luxembourg e partecipò a una mostra tenuta da La Libre Esthétique. Dal 1896 al 1901, continuò a esporre in tutta Europa, vincendo diverse medaglie d'oro. Nel 1913, ha servito come membro della giuria artistica per l'Esposizione Universale di Gand. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, ha vissuto a Londra, tornando a Gand nel 1919. Nello stesso anno, è stato nominato membro dell'Accademia Reale del Belgio. Due anni dopo, una retrospettiva del suo lavoro è stata tenuta alla Galerie Georges Giroux di Bruxelles. Morì a Gand nel 1922.
