Antoine de Favray
Ritratti ottomani e maltesi
Il cavaliere Antoine de Favray fu un pittore francese noto per i suoi ritratti di personalità dell'Impero ottomano, nonché per i dipinti dei Gran Maestri del Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta. Nel 1762, Antoine de Favray si trasferì a Costantinopoli, dove trascorse nove anni. Dipinse numerose scene di genere della vita quotidiana in Turchia sotto Luigi XVI, e ritrasse anche abitanti locali e dignitari stranieri. Particolarmente notevoli sono un ritratto dell'ambasciatore francese Charles Gravier, conte di Vergennes (1717-1787), che visse a Costantinopoli tra il 1754 e il 1768, e un ritratto della moglie di Gravier, Annette Duvivier de Testa (1730-1798). Era stata precedentemente sposata con Testa, un mercante e membro di una prominente famiglia genovese stabilitasi a Pera da diversi secoli. Favray ritrasse sia l'ambasciatore che sua moglie con ricchi abiti turchi.
