Arthur Devis

Arthur Devis fue un artista nacido en Lancashire, medio hermano del pintor Anthony Devis (1729–1816) y padre de los pintores Thomas Anthony Devis (1757–1810) y Arthur William Devis (1762–1822). Su lugar en las páginas de la historia del arte es generalmente el de un pintor del tipo de retrato ahora llamado 'conversation piece'. Arthur fue enseñado por el pintor flamenco Peter Tillemans. Aunque su obra temprana fue en parte como artista paisajista, también aprovechó conexiones familiares para conseguir clientes para retratos de miembros de familias lancastrianas pro-jacobitas. De hecho, para 1737 ya se había inclinado hacia la pintura de retratos, estableciendo un estudio en Londres. En Londres, Devis adquirió una considerable reputación, aunque su éxito siguió una cierta parábola. Frente a otras corrientes artísticas de moda representadas por obras de pintores como Joshua Reynolds y Johann Zoffany, sus encargos disminuyeron y se vio obligado a dedicarse a la restauración de cuadros. Su matrimonio en 1742 le dio veintidós hijos, aunque pocos sobrevivieron. Vendió todas las pinturas en su posesión en 1783 y murió retirado en Brighton en 1787.
