Arthur Devis

Arthur Devis era un artista nato nel Lancashire, fratellastro del pittore Anthony Devis (1729–1816) e padre dei pittori Thomas Anthony Devis (1757–1810) e Arthur William Devis (1762–1822). Il suo posto nelle pagine della storia dell'arte è generalmente quello di un pittore del tipo di ritratto oggi chiamato 'conversation piece'. Arthur fu istruito dal pittore fiammingo Peter Tillemans. Sebbene i suoi primi lavori fossero in parte come artista paesaggista, si avvalse anche di connessioni familiari per ottenere clienti per ritratti dei membri delle famiglie lancastriane filo-giacobite. Infatti, entro il 1737 si era orientato verso la pittura di ritratti, aprendo uno studio a Londra. A Londra Devis acquisì una notevole reputazione, sebbene il suo successo seguisse una certa parabola. Di fronte ad altre correnti artistiche di moda rappresentate dalle opere di pittori come Joshua Reynolds e Johann Zoffany, le sue commissioni diminuirono e fu costretto a dedicarsi al restauro di quadri. Il suo matrimonio nel 1742 gli diede ventidue figli, anche se pochi sopravvissero. Vendette tutti i dipinti in suo possesso nel 1783 e morì in pensione a Brighton nel 1787.
