アーサー・デヴィス
英会話風肖像画の先駆者
アーサー・デヴィスはランカシャー出身の芸術家で、画家アンソニー・デヴィス（1729–1816）の異母兄弟であり、画家トーマス・アンソニー・デヴィス（1757–1810）とアーサー・ウィリアム・デヴィス（1762–1822）の父である。美術史において彼は、現在「会話風景画」と呼ばれるタイプの肖像画家として位置づけられている。 アーサーはフランダースの画家ピーター・ティレマンスに師事した。初期の作品は一部風景画であったが、彼は家族のコネクションを活用して、ジェイコバイト派を支持するランカシャー地方の家族の肖像画の依頼人を獲得した。実際、1737年までには肖像画に専念し、ロンドンにスタジオを構えた。 ロンドンでデヴィスはかなりの評判を得たが、その成功は一定の放物線を描いた。ジョシュア・レノルズやヨハン・ゾファニーといった画家たちの作品に代表される他の流行芸術の潮流に直面し、彼の依頼は減少し、絵画の修復に転じざるを得なくなった。1742年に結婚し22人の子供をもうけたが、生き残ったのはわずかだった。1783年に所有するすべての絵画を売却し、1787年にブライトンで引退生活を送りながら亡くなった。
