아서 데비스
영국 대화식 초상화 선구자
아서 데비스는 랭커셔 출신의 예술가로, 화가 앤서니 데비스(1729–1816)의 이복형제이며, 화가 토머스 앤서니 데비스(1757–1810)와 아서 윌리엄 데비스(1762–1822)의 아버지이다. 그는 미술사에서 현재 ‘대화 장면화’라고 불리는 유형의 초상화가로 일반적으로 평가된다. 아서는 플랑드르 화가 피터 틸레만스에게 배웠다. 초기 작품은 일부 풍경화였지만, 그는 가족 관계를 활용하여 제이코바이트당을 지지하는 랭커셔 가문의 초상화 의뢰인을 확보했다. 실제로 1737년까지 그는 초상화로 전향하여 런던에 스튜디오를 차렸다. 런던에서 데비스는 상당한 명성을 얻었으나, 그의 성공은 일정한 포물선을 따랐다. 조슈아 레이놀즈와 요한 조파니 같은 화가들의 작품으로 대표되는 다른 유행 예술 흐름에 직면하여 그의 의뢰는 줄어들었고, 그는 그림 복원 작업으로 전향할 수밖에 없었다. 그는 1742년 결혼하여 스물두 명의 자녀를 두었지만, 살아남은 아이는 거의 없었다. 1783년 그는 소유한 모든 그림을 팔았고, 1787년 브라이튼에서 은퇴 생활을 하다가 사망했다.
