Arthur Devis

Arthur Devis foi um artista nascido em Lancashire, meio-irmão do pintor Anthony Devis (1729–1816) e pai dos pintores Thomas Anthony Devis (1757–1810) e Arthur William Devis (1762–1822). Seu lugar nas páginas da história da arte é geralmente o de um pintor do tipo de retrato hoje chamado de 'conversation piece'. Arthur foi ensinado pelo pintor flamengo Peter Tillemans. Embora seu trabalho inicial tenha sido em parte como artista de paisagens, ele também recorreu a conexões familiares para conquistar clientes para retratos de membros das famílias lancastrianas pró-jacobitas. De fato, até 1737, ele havia se voltado para a pintura de retratos, estabelecendo um estúdio em Londres. Em Londres, Devis adquiriu uma reputação considerável, embora seu sucesso tenha seguido uma certa parábola. Diante de outras correntes artísticas da moda representadas pelas obras de pintores como Joshua Reynolds e Johann Zoffany, suas encomendas diminuíram e ele foi obrigado a passar a restaurar quadros. Seu casamento em 1742 resultou em vinte e dois filhos, embora poucos tenham sobrevivido. Ele vendeu todas as pinturas em sua posse em 1783 e morreu aposentado em Brighton em 1787.
