アーサー・ラムリー
南北戦争挿絵の先駆者
アーサー・ラムリーはアイルランドのダブリンで生まれ、1840年頃にアメリカ合衆国に渡り、ブルックリンに住みました。1850年代、彼はナショナル・アカデミー・オブ・デザインで美術を学び、書籍や newly founded な挿絵入り新聞『ニューヨーク・イラストレイテッド』、『ハーパーズ・ウィークリー』、『フランク・レスリーズ・イラストレイテッド・ニューズペーパー』への挿絵制作で生計を立てました。 1861年4月、フランク・レスリーはラムリーを「特別アーティスト」としてワシントンD.C.に派遣し、アーウィン・マクドウェル将軍の軍に従ってバージニア州南部へ進軍させ、ブルラン・クリークで南軍と交戦させた。ラムリーは、連邦軍が当初成功した攻撃の際の大規模なパノラマ画を描き、ニューヨーク市消防ゾアーブ連隊の銃剣突撃の詳細なスケッチも行った。 南軍の増援部隊が反撃して北軍の攻撃を破った際、ラムリーは連邦軍がワシントンへ退却する際に生じたパニックを鮮明に描き出した。1862年、彼は『ニューヨーク・イラストレイテッド』で働き始めた。全体として、『レスリーズ』と『ニューヨーク・イラストレイテッド』はラムリーの戦時中の絵画を298点掲載した。また、彼は1870年代初頭に米国初のイラスト入り日刊紙として創刊された『ザ・デイリー・グラフィック』にも社会風刺の絵画を提供した。
