Augustus Pugin
Pionier der Neugotik
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin war ein englischer Architekt, Designer, Künstler und Kritiker, der vor allem für seine bahnbrechende Rolle im Stil der Gotischen Revival-Architektur in Erinnerung bleibt. Sein Werk gipfelte im Entwurf des Inneren des Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, England, sowie seines ikonischen Uhrenturms, der später in Elizabeth Tower umbenannt wurde und die als Big Ben bekannte Glocke beherbergt. Pugin entwarf viele Kirchen in England sowie einige in Irland und Australien. Er war der Sohn von Auguste Pugin und der Vater von Edward Welby Pugin und Peter Paul Pugin, die seine Architekturfirma unter dem Namen Pugin & Pugin fortführten. Er gestaltete auch das Alton Castle in Alton, Staffordshire.
