Augustus Pugin
Pionier van neogotiek
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was een Engelse architect, ontwerper, kunstenaar en criticus die vooral bekend is gebleven om zijn baanbrekende rol in de gotische revival-stijl van de architectuur. Zijn werk bereikte zijn hoogtepunt met het ontwerp van het interieur van het Paleis van Westminster in Westminster, Londen, Engeland, en zijn iconische klokkentoren, later hernoemd tot Elizabeth Tower, die de klok huisvest die bekendstaat als Big Ben. Pugin ontwierp veel kerken in Engeland, evenals enkele in Ierland en Australië. Hij was de zoon van Auguste Pugin en de vader van Edward Welby Pugin en Peter Paul Pugin, die zijn architectenbureau onder de naam Pugin & Pugin voortzetten. Hij ontwierp ook het Alton Castle in Alton, Staffordshire.
