Balthasar van der Ast

Balthasar van der Ast fu un pittore olandese dell'Età dell'Oro specializzato in nature morte di fiori e frutta, nonché autore di diverse notevoli nature morte con conchiglie; è considerato un pioniere nel genere della pittura di conchiglie. Le sue nature morte contengono spesso insetti e lucertole. Balthasar van der Ast nacque a Middelburg, nella provincia meridionale olandese della Zelanda, in una famiglia di prosperi mercanti di lana. La sua nascita non fu registrata, ma anni dopo, il 30 giugno 1618, un'azione legale intrapresa dal suo fratello maggiore Jacob indicò che Balthasar aveva circa 25 anni all'epoca, collocando la sua data di nascita nel 1593 o 1594. Suo padre, Hans, era vedovo e, quando morì nel 1609, Balthasar si trasferì dalla sorella maggiore, Maria, e dal cognato, il prominente pittore olandese Ambrosius Bosschaert il Vecchio (1573–1621), che Maria aveva sposato nel 1604. Van der Ast fu formato da Bosschaert come pittore di nature morte, e le sue prime opere mostrano chiaramente l'influenza di Bosschaert. A loro volta, i tre figli di Ambrosius Bosschaert, Ambrosius il Giovane (1609–1645), Johannes (ca. 1612/13-1628 o successivo) e Abraham (1606-1683/84), furono formati da van der Ast dopo la morte del padre. Van der Ast accompagnò la famiglia Bosschaert nel loro trasferimento nel 1615 a Bergen op Zoom e nel 1619 a Utrecht, dove entrò nella Corporazione di San Luca di Utrecht. Roelandt Savery (1576–1639) entrò nella corporazione di San Luca di Utrecht all'incirca nello stesso periodo. Savery ebbe un'influenza considerevole su Van der Ast e sui suoi allievi negli anni successivi, in particolare per quanto riguarda l'interesse di Van der Ast per la tonalità. Oltre ai Bosschaert, i suoi allievi furono Anthony Claesz e Johannes Baers. È anche probabile che Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606-1683/84) sia stato allievo di Van der Ast a Utrecht. Egli influenzò anche Willem ed Evert van Aelst, nonché Bartholomeus Assteyn. Van der Ast rimase a Utrecht fino al 1632, quando si trasferì a Delft, dove entrò a far parte della gilda di San Luca il 22 giugno 1633. Nel febbraio 1633 sposò Margrieta Jans van Buijeren. Ebbero due figli, Maria e Helena. A Delft, Van der Ast e la sua famiglia vissero nella casa di Cellebroerstraat fino al 1640, e poi nella casa di Oude Delft fino alla sua morte nel 1657, quando fu sepolto nell'Oude Kerk.
