Battista Franco
Peintre maniériste, graveur original
Battista Franco Veneziano, également connu sous son vrai nom de Giovanni Battista Franco, était un peintre et graveur à l'eau-forte maniériste italien actif à Rome, Urbino et Venise au milieu du XVIe siècle. Il est aussi connu sous le nom d'il Semolei ou simplement Battista Franco. Originaire de Venise, il arriva à Rome dans la vingtaine. Il peignit une allégorie de la Bataille de Montemurlo, aujourd'hui conservée au Palais Pitti (1537), ainsi qu'une fresque représentant l'Arrestation de Jean le Baptiste pour l'Oratoire de San Giovanni Decollato (1541). De 1545 à 1551, il travailla à Urbino. Il fut peut-être, aux côtés de Girolamo Genga, l'un des mentors de Federico Barocci. Sa peinture, de style maniériste, était fortement influencée par Michel-Ange ; cependant, ses dessins et ses eaux-fortes témoignent d'une bien plus grande verve et originalité. De retour à Venise, il contribua à la réalisation des fresques du plafond de la Biblioteca Marciana. Il exécuta une série de panneaux, dont un Baptême du Christ (chapelle Barbaro), destinés aux murs et à la voûte de la chapelle Grimani dans l'église San Francesco della Vigna à Venise. Il peignit également la Résurrection de Lazare au Palais des Doges.
