Battista Franco
Pittore manierista, incisore originale
Battista Franco Veneziano, noto anche con il suo vero nome di Giovanni Battista Franco, fu un pittore e incisore all'acquaforte manierista italiano attivo a Roma, Urbino e Venezia nella metà del XVI secolo. È conosciuto anche come il Semolei o semplicemente Battista Franco. Nativo di Venezia, giunse a Roma poco più che ventenne. Dipinse un'allegoria della Battaglia di Montemurlo, oggi conservata a Palazzo Pitti (1537), e un affresco raffigurante l'Arresto di Giovanni Battista per l'Oratorio di San Giovanni Decollato (1541). Dal 1545 al 1551 lavorò come pittore a Urbino. Potrebbe essere stato, insieme a Girolamo Genga, uno dei maestri di Federico Barocci. La sua pittura, in stile manierista, era fortemente debitrice a Michelangelo; tuttavia, i suoi disegni e le sue incisioni mostrano una verve e un'originalità ben maggiori. Tornato a Venezia, contribuì alla realizzazione degli affreschi del soffitto della Biblioteca Marciana. Dipinse una serie di pannelli, tra cui un Battesimo di Cristo (cappella Barbaro), per le pareti e la volta della cappella Grimani nella chiesa di San Francesco della Vigna a Venezia. Nel Palazzo Ducale realizzò la Resurrezione di Lazzaro.
