Benedetto Luti
Pioniere del pastello come opera
Benedetto Luti fu un pittore italiano. Luti nacque a Firenze il 17 novembre 1666. Nel 1691 si trasferì a Roma, dove godette del mecenatismo di Cosimo III de' Medici, Granduca di Toscana, grande estimatore dei ritratti a pastello di Luti. Luti fu tra i primi artisti a utilizzare il pastello come opera finita, anziché solo come studio preparatorio per dipinti o affreschi. Lavorò anche a olio e realizzò affreschi, tra cui quelli per la Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. Luti fu anche un mercante d'arte di successo e gestiva una scuola di disegno. Nel 1720 fu nominato cavaliere nell'Accademia di San Luca a Roma ed eletto Principe.
