Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp
Pintor holandés de trazo áspero
Benjamin Gerritszoon Cuyp fue un pintor de paisajes del Siglo de Oro neerlandés. Cuyp nació y murió en Dordrecht. Según Houbraken, fue alumno de su tío, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, quien le enseñó junto con su hijo (el primo de Benjamin) Aelbert Cuyp. Houbraken consideraba que Aelbert tenía trazos más precisos, mientras que Benjamin mostraba el enfoque tosco de su maestro. Según el RKD, Houbraken se equivocó sobre la familia, y tanto Benjamin como Jacob nacieron en Dordrecht como hijos de un pintor de vidrio de Venlo llamado Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp. Benjamin aprendió a pintar de su medio hermano mayor, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp. Por lo tanto, era el tío, no el primo, del mucho más famoso Aelbert Cuyp. Es conocido por sus piezas alegóricas, obras de género, escenas de playa, escenas militares y paisajes. Influyó en Barent van Kalraet, y fue seguido por Maerten Fransz van der Hulst.
