Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp

Benjamin Gerritszoon Cuyp était un peintre paysagiste du Siècle d'or néerlandais. Cuyp est né et mort à Dordrecht. Selon Houbraken, il fut l'élève de son oncle, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, qui l'instruisit en même temps que son fils (le cousin de Benjamin) Aelbert Cuyp. Houbraken estimait qu'Aelbert avait des coups de pinceau plus nets tandis que Benjamin montrait l'approche rugueuse de son maître. Selon le RKD, Houbraken s'est trompé sur la famille, et Benjamin et Jacob sont tous deux nés à Dordrecht en tant que fils d'un peintre verrier de Venlo nommé Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp. Benjamin a appris la peinture auprès de son demi-frère aîné, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp. Il était donc l'oncle, et non le cousin, du bien plus célèbre Aelbert Cuyp. Il est connu pour ses pièces allégoriques, ses œuvres de genre, ses scènes de plage, ses scènes militaires et ses paysages. Il a influencé Barent van Kalraet, et a été suivi par Maerten Fransz van der Hulst.
