Bonifacio Veronese
Peintre vénitien influencé par Titien
Bonifacio Veronese, nom de naissance Bonifacio de' Pitati, était un peintre italien de la Renaissance actif dans la République de Venise. Son œuvre a exercé une influence importante sur la jeune génération de peintres vénitiens, en particulier Andrea Schiavone et Jacopo Tintoretto. L'artiste est né à Vérone, d'où sa famille a déménagé à Venise vers 1505. On raconte que le jeune artiste s'y est formé auprès de Palma il Vecchio. Il fut initialement un disciple fidèle d'il Vecchio. Il dirigeait un grand atelier à Venise, capable de réaliser aussi bien de petites œuvres de dévotion que de vastes projets picturaux. Ses premières œuvres témoignent également de sa connaissance de Giorgione et du Titien. Il a créé une vaste série de peintures narratives pour le Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. Il a fallu 20 ans pour achever ce projet. Son style fut influencé par celui de Giorgione et du Titien. À partir des années 1530, l'artiste introduisit certains éléments figuratifs d'origine italienne centrale, dérivés principalement de Raphaël. Durant ces années-là, il fit fortune à Venise. De nombreux cassoni et décorations de meubles lui sont attribués. On dit qu'il a exercé une influence durable sur Andrea Schiavone et Le Tintoret. Il est mort à Venise.
