Bonifacio Veronese
Venetiaanse schilder beïnvloed door Titiaan
Bonifacio Veronese, geboortenaam Bonifacio de' Pitati, was een Italiaanse renaissanceschilder die actief was in de Republiek Venetië. Zijn werk had een belangrijke invloed op de jongere generatie schilders in Venetië, met name Andrea Schiavone en Jacopo Tintoretto. De kunstenaar werd geboren in Verona, vanwaar zijn familie rond 1505 naar Venetië verhuisde. Naar verluidt kreeg de jonge kunstenaar daar zijn opleiding bij Palma il Vecchio. Aanvankelijk was hij een trouw volgeling van il Vecchio. Hij runde een groot atelier in Venetië, dat zowel kleine devotionele werken als grote schilderprojecten kon uitvoeren. Zijn vroege werk toont ook zijn kennis van Giorgione en Titiaan. Hij maakte een omvangrijke reeks verhalende schilderijen voor het Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. Het duurde 20 jaar om het project te voltooien. Zijn stijl werd beïnvloed door die van Giorgione en Titiaan. Vanaf de jaren 1530 introduceerde de kunstenaar enkele figuratieve elementen van Midden-Italiaanse oorsprong, voornamelijk afgeleid van Rafaël. In die jaren vergaarde hij een fortuin in Venetië. Veel cassoni en meubeldecoraties worden aan hem toegeschreven. Er wordt gezegd dat hij een blijvende invloed had op Andrea Schiavone en Tintoretto. Hij stierf in Venetië.
