Serene minimalist Yuan literati landscapes

Cao Zhibai(曹知白) (1272–1355), courtesy names Youxuan(又玄) and Zhensu(贞素), styled Yunxi(云西), was also known as Mr. Zhensu(贞素). He was from Zhenxi in Huating County, Songjiang Prefecture during the Yuan dynasty (today Xiaozheng, Liantang Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai), originally from Caocun, Rui'an. He was a Yuan dynasty painter and book collector. From a young age, he read extensively and was interested in the teachings of Huang-Lao. His family owned several thousand volumes of classic books, and he especially loved collecting calligraphy and paintings. In 1294 (the 31st year of Zhiyuan), he participated in dredging the Wusong River water conservancy project, and in 1304 (the 8th year of Dade), he proposed a method for building dikes. He served as an education officer in Kunshan but later resigned to live in seclusion. He associated with famous figures like Zhao Mengfu, Deng Wenyuan, Yu Ji, and Wang Mian, and had particularly close relationships with Ni Zan and Huang Gongwang. His home garden became a center for literary gatherings. Together with Ni Zan of Wuxi and Gu Ying of Kunshan, he was known as one of the 'Three Great Literati of Jiangnan.' Cao Zhibai excelled in landscape painting, following the styles of Li Cheng and Guo Xi while also incorporating techniques from Dong Yuan and Ju Ran. His representative works include 'Pine Forest in the Distance,' 'Snow-Cleared Peaks,' and 'Cold Forest.' His early brushwork was delicate and refined, while in later years, his style turned serene, simple, and elegant, forming a minimalist and clear literati painting style. Huang Gongwang praised his later works for their 'pure and refined charm, truly unmatched.' He was especially skilled at depicting snowy scenes and cold forests, known for his sparse and graceful use of pine trees. He passed away on February 5 in the 15th year of Zhizheng and was buried in March at the source of Ganshan in Xiuzhu Township. More than twenty of his paintings survive today, housed in institutions such as the Palace Museum, Shanghai Museum, National Palace Museum in Taipei, and museums or art galleries in the United States, France, and Japan.
