Charles Buckles Falls

Charles Buckles Falls, noto anche come C. B. Falls, era un artista americano, principalmente noto per le sue illustrazioni e scritti. È autore e illustratore di numerosi libri, tra cui The ABC Book. È conosciuto anche per i suoi manifesti pubblicitari della Prima Guerra Mondiale, come Books Wanted. Charles Buckles Falls nacque il 10 dicembre 1874 a Fort Wayne, nell'Indiana. All'inizio dei suoi vent'anni si trasferì a Chicago, dove intraprese la carriera di assistente di architetto e disegnatore di schizzi per il Chicago Tribune. Mentre lavorava come assistente di architetto, imparò da autodidatta il disegno tecnico e divenne alla fine un artista freelance. Insoddisfatto del suo stipendio, Falls lasciò il Chicago Tribune e si trasferì a New York intorno al 1900. A New York faticò a trovare lavoro finché non incontrò l'artista e scrittore Joseph Pennell. Falls ha illustrato molti libri diversi per vari autori, così come varie riviste e manifesti. Durante la prima guerra mondiale, fu membro della Society of Illustrators, con la quale produsse propaganda di guerra per la Divisione di Pubblicità Pittorica del Comitato per l'Informazione Pubblica. Sebbene sia noto soprattutto per le sue illustrazioni di poster e libri, Falls fu coinvolto anche in molte forme d'arte diverse. Progettò tessuti, mobili e persino legature commerciali. Fu anche coinvolto nella scenografia, contribuendo a progettare scenografie e costumi per l'American Society of Illustrators, nonché per il Palace Theatre e il Fifth Avenue Theatre a New York. Nel 1914, Falls scrisse, diresse e interpretò uno spettacolo chiamato "Perfectly Happy" che fu messo in scena al Berkeley Theatre. Falls ha inoltre creato disegni e illustrazioni per varie riviste, tra cui Vogue, Redbook, Collier's ed Everybody's, oltre che per diverse società come Dodd, Meade, & Co., Edison & Co. e Marshall Field & Co..
