チャールズ・ジェイ・テイラーは1855年にニューヨークで生まれた。彼はコロンビア大学で法律を学び、その後、アート・スチューデンツ・リーグ、ナショナル・アカデミー・オブ・デザイン（イーストマン・ジョンソンに師事）、ニューヨーク市立大学で美術を学び、ロンドンとパリでも研鑽を積んだ。『ニューヨーク・デイリー・グラフィック』紙や『ハーパーズ』、『パック』、『パンチ』などの雑誌に挿絵を提供した。彼の著書『テイラー・ガールズ』は国際的な称賛を得た。
