찰스 제이 테일러는 1855년 뉴욕에서 태어났다. 그는 컬럼비아 대학교에서 법학을 공부한 후, 아트 스튜던츠 리그, 내셔널 아카데미 오브 디자인(이스트먼 존슨과 함께), 뉴욕시립대학교에서 미술을 공부했으며, 런던과 파리에서도 수학했다. 그는 뉴욕의 데일리 그래픽과 하퍼스, 퍽, 펀치 같은 잡지에 삽화를 기고했다. 그의 책 '테일러 걸스'는 국제적인 찬사를 받았다.
