Charles Sprague Pearce

Charles Sprague Pearce era un artista americano. Pearce nacque a Boston, nel Massachusetts. Nel 1873 divenne allievo di Léon Bonnat a Parigi, e dopo il 1885 visse a Parigi e ad Auvers-sur-Oise. Dipinse scene egiziane e algerine, contadini francesi e ritratti, nonché opere decorative, in particolare per l'edificio Thomas Jefferson della Biblioteca del Congresso a Washington. Ricevette medaglie al Salon di Parigi e altrove, e fu nominato Cavaliere della Legion d'Onore francese, decorato con l'Ordine di Leopoldo del Belgio, l'Ordine dell'Aquila Rossa della Prussia e l'Ordine del Dannebrog della Danimarca. Tra i suoi dipinti più noti vi sono La decapitazione di San Giovanni Battista (1881), La preghiera (1884), Il ritorno del gregge e Meditazione. Pearce fu anche tra coloro che conobbero e dipinsero la musa di Capri, Rosina Ferrara.
